In the weeks before Christmas, we celebrate a period of preparation known as Advent. Likewise, in the weeks before Easter, we journey through the season of Lent.
During these holy periods in the church year, we set aside time to center ourselves with a Wednesday evening prayer service, preceded by a simple meal of soup and bread.
ADVENT
Advent is the first season of the church year. It is a time of hope, preparation and anticipation of the new life promised in Christ.
In our churches and in our homes, we mark the seasons with traditions such as Advent wreaths and devotions. Christ Lutheran offers children’s Advent calendars and age-appropriate devotions to help families share in a Christ-focused celebration of the season.
The traditional Advent period begins on the fourth Sunday before Christmas Day, and it lasts through Christmas Eve (December 24), unless Christmas Eve falls on a Sunday, in which case, Christmas eve becomes the fourth Sunday of Advent.
LENT
During the season of Lent, we practice self-reflection and repentance as we journey to Christ’s sacrifice on the cross and his resurrection. The season begins with Ash Wednesday and continues through Holy Week. Occasionally, we partner with neighboring congregations for the services of Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. Holy Week culminates with Easter Sunday.
Lent is the six week period leading up to Easter which begins with Ash Wednesday.
WORSHIP IN THE PARK
On the last Sunday of August, Christ Lutheran holds a Sunday worship service in the Aurora City Park. Joining us are our friends from Aurora, Presbyterian Church. In this single service, we gather together outdoors to give thanks for God’s creation. Following the service, we share in our annual church potluck picnic and dessert auction.
PET BLESSING CEREMONY
Each October, in recognition of the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, Pastor Craig offers a pet blessing ceremony in the Aurora City Park.
